India has 440 million children. Whilst enrolment into primary schools is high, 65% of students leave school without basic literacy and numeracy skills and 1 in 4 children of school going age drop out of school. The need for a systematic approach to the issue of poor quality education in under-resourced schools is becoming increasingly important in India.
Across our South India Fellowships, we support the existing work of the award-winning 'LIFT Thermax Foundation' and NGO 'Mantra for Change'. Fellows also work directly with local Headteachers and Teach for India alumni to provide high-quality teacher training through an interactive workshop and following up with lesson observations and coaching.
Since 2013, LIFT has worked with over 240 teachers across 40 schools impacting close to 8000 children in Schools across Pune. It set up a year-long professional development programme to strengthen the education system in the city. We have worked with LIFT since 2016, with Fellows working closely with teachers at LIFT to improve the quality of teaching in the area.
You will start by getting to know the rest of the team and enjoying the local culinary delights of India. The first phase of the Fellowship involves visiting schools to understand the education context in the region. The team will then work together to plan the training and school support programs.
Visit the teachers you will be working with and conduct observations and provide some coaching. Move on to leading training sessions and working closely with the teachers to support them in their roles, alongside the school leaders and our partners.
Support the teachers to ensure training continues after you leave. The trip will end with an amazing excursion to Goa to see some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and reflect on what your team as achieved and the legacy you have started.
The training was particularly effective when we all focused on corporal punishment and a clear message was given in schools, at the conference days and in the coaching.
The highlights were working with other teachers who were just excellent- not just in technique but in personality and character. I loved seeing India in such an authentic way, and meeting so many inspiring, warm, hospitable Indians.
I think the conferences were a great success. I really enjoyed working with others in delivering the sessions and also speaking with my fellow fellows about how to approach certain situations.
The biggest source of confidence that I got was from the other fellows and their variety of experiences.
By working in close partnership with locally-led teacher development organisations and by taking a data-driven approach to our work, we are able to track teacher development to evaluate the impact of our training and continually improve our course.
