January 3 Jan - 24 Jan 2019
Malaysia is a fascinating country to visit. After a successful first LRTT Fellowship in August 2017, being part of the 2018 team presents teachers with an exciting opportunity to continue shaping the program, in a country of contrasts where 1 in 5 students do not finish secondary school. Collaborate with local teachers to share global learning on education and teacher development.
We will support in implementing the country's Education Blueprint which focuses on '21st Century Learning'. This is the beginning of a long-term program with teachers exchanging ideas through workshops, observations and coaching. Working at the district level will enable sustainable change as district officials will also be part of the training and develop their coaching skills.
We work with Teach for Malaysia and Penang District Education Office to plan training programmes in line with the specific needs of teachers in the district. The team of Fellows in 2017 were so warmly welcomed by the local teachers, and the training was so well received that we are so excited to return in 2018.
You will fly into Penang and spend the first few days settling into your new home of Georgetown which has some of the best street food in Asia. You will visit schools to start to understand the education context and learn from some amazing school transformation projects being run by Teach for Malaysia alumni.
After planning the training you will run a series of workshops for over 100 teachers from across Penang. You will then spend time visiting your group of 10 teacher in their schools to observe them and provide coaching. You will also support the district education officers to improve their own coaching skills so that ideas and strategies from the training continues after you leave.
This trip will finish with a chance to explore and relax on some of Malaysia’s incredible islands. You will be able to reflect on what your team has achieved in only three weeks and the legacy you have started.
I was blown away by the hospitality of the teachers, the friendship amongst our group, and I took away so much more than I imagined and left inspired. Georgetown is truly unique and I enjoyed getting to know my surroundings.
I had a brilliant time in Malaysia and liked being in a city location this time. It was a very different experience to last year, which has been beneficial for me, as both fellowships have challenged me in different ways.
I had a fabulous trip and met some amazing fellows and amazing teachers! I did come back to school in September re-inspired!
The group will stay in “flash-packer” style accommodation with wifi and hot showers in the centre of Georgetown.
You will be met at Penang airport and all transport during your trip is included. You will be staying within walking distance from the training venue and transport to visit schools will be taxis or local buses.
Your team leaders are both qualified teachers who will bring their experience from LRTT fellowships in Nepal and Rwanda to lead this exciting new project alongside our partners.
Once you've submitted your application you can expect to hear from one of the team leaders within 48 hours.
As part of our commitment to high-quality teacher training, we conduct 30-40 minute phone interviews with all applicants.
If successful, you'll receive a congratulatory phone call or email from a team leader, with 7 days to confirm your place.
Once we have received confirmation of your place, you will be welcomed onto the team via email and facebook.
